Thick Felt Rug Pad

Our Superior is a 100% recycled felt rug pad that goes against the norm of containing a common adhesive coating. Instead, once our felt is needle punched together to form the padding, we use heat to press it all together to keep it from shedding. Rug Pad for a Cause is our way of giving back – We are always happy to receive a rug pad order because it means another donation to a charitable organization. St Jude Partner In Hope

St Jude is a pediatric treatment and research facility where many dreams come true. Thanks to the Hospital, more and more children with cancer and other catastrophic illnesses have a chance for a better life. Since most of what happens at St Jude, including research and child treatment, is based on outside contributions, we have been actively contributing since the launch of our Rug Pad for a Cause Campaign. Once a donor reaches a certain level of contributions, they become a “Partner In Hope” and we are very honored to reach this level. Our contributions, as well as thousands of others, are helping the Hospital get closer to its goal of successfully treating more patients with a cure.

Rug Pad Corner’s Role

When a customer makes a purchase on our web site, during checkout they are confronted with the question of to which organization they would like us to contribute a portion of their order. There are three options, as well as the option of “Choose for me” if the customer is undecided. When we see this choice, we mostly choose St Jude Children’s Hospital due to our thoughts of all of the affected children who need help. Of course, when customers make a definitive selection, we then record each and at the proper time, forward the donations accordingly.

Until about six months ago, the percentage of choices were about equally shared among The American Red Cross, St Jude Children’s Hospital and The American Cancer Society. So, it is thank to our customers that our donations to St Jude have been so strong. Without their choices, we would not be able to send the funds that we do. While customers’ selections of where we should donate proceeds from every order don’t actually cost the customers anything, it is a direction for us, as we donate where we are requested to donate. Is It The Rug Pad They Claim It To Be?

It has come to our knowledge that many stores offering rug pads are making various claims about their products. These are claims about rug pads that are made in the USA and ones that do not contain adhesive. Unfortunately, we have determined that many of these claims are false.

False Rug Pad Claims

When it comes to a rug pad, it is quite difficult for consumers to determine a few things. It is difficult to know if the item was made in the USA or overseas. It is difficult to determine and know the exact contents of the rug pad or the method of manufacture. Obviously, based on the type of product that it is, most information related to rug pads needs to be supplied by the store representing the products. When shopping for a rug pad, it has never been more important to be able to trust the store from which you buy, as this determines the fate of your area rugs and floors. We have confirmed that several stores are actually offering false claims about the rug pads they offer.

Claims of American Made Rug Pads

One of the most common deceptions is related to those rug pads that are claimed to be made in the USA. The thought of buying American Made has become so popular and desirable these days that many stores state just that because they know it is what customers want to believe. Many standardized products are distinctly stamped with their country of origin, unfortunately some rug pads vary slightly from this – the ones that are offered in cut sizes in packages on a shelf normally contain the origin on an insert within the package. The other way to offer rug pads, such as the method we use of custom cutting to size, involves cutting to order from the raw rug pad rolls. These rolls are not marked by any specific label of origin, so consumers really need to know and trust the store they deal with. Most stores actually use a third party supplier from which they get their rug pads, so there is no indication of origin – it can be the USA, China or anywhere else, yet most likely China. Since we manufacture our own products, we constantly visit our mills to know that our rug pads are always made in the USA.

Claims of Natural Rug Pads

In a world in which it has never been so important to follow natural, safe and green practices, rug pad suppliers are easily labeling their products as “Natural”, “LEED Certified”, “Organic”, or anything else that consumers like to hear. Unfortunately, rug pad suppliers and stores take advantage of consumer demand and preference by conveniently claiming their products accordingly. Again, like with the origin of our rug pads, Rug Pad Corner knows exactly what goes into all of our rug pads because we are the manufacturer. When we visit our mills and specifically demand the most natural rug pads, they know this means no addition of adhesive, glue or chemicals that are so common among others. Quite possibly one of the only guarantees that the next rug pad you buy is as natural as can be is if it is purchased from us or from someone who we supply, such as one of our interior design or home furnishings clients.

So, which stores are advertising something that it is not? While we will not disclose any names, we will state that there have been several customers who have presented various scenarios to us related to their recent rug pad experience with other suppliers. One close to home in Connecticut, for example, is claiming to only offer every Rug Pad from the USA. Upon review, we discovered that two of the eight rug pads offered are actually made in the USA, with the majority being imported from China. We found this same store recently also claiming that the rubber in its felt and rubber rug pad is “Heat Pressed” to the felt – To date, Rug Pad Corner is the only company utilizing a heat pressing process that is appropriately called RPC Heat Pressed™.

Is it the rug pad they claim it to be? While there are some stores that offer exactly what they claim the product to be, there are many that do not and this is unfortunate. The best advice we can offer is to do your research on the store to determine if it has been around long enough to be reliable. Also, pay attention to the products offered by the store – There are many that offer hundreds of types of products and the rug pad is not given much attention. These simple suggestions will help determine if the store can be trusted:

• Look for any public reviews site offering feedback on the store
• Check to see if the store is associated with any GREEN rated organizations
• Check to see if the store is associated with industry-specific organizations

Certified RPC Heat Pressed™ Rug Pads

Rug pads certified as RPC Heat Pressed are those that are manufactured without any glues or adhesives. These rug pads are reinforced during production with intense heat, to avoid the common harmful glues and adhesives that damage floors.

Felt rug pads go through a series of production stages, one of them being the finishing touch of reinforcing the felt. This means that once the padding is compressed into the required thickness, a process is then applied to prevent the felt from shedding or fraying when in use. Without this process, felt rug pads can start to shed in the home, something best to avoid. Most rug pads contain an adhesive coating as the method to prevent the felt from shedding. Based on the fact that Rug Pad Corner maintains the most natural quality rug pads, we do not coat our rug pads with adhesive. We developed our own exclusive process involving heat to reinforce the felt fibers to the rug pad. The result is Certified RPC Heat Pressed™ Rug Pads that can be used on any type of floor without risk of damage.

During their production, felt rug pads undergo a final process of reinforcing the felt to the pad to prevent any shedding when in use. For reasons of ease and cost, manufacturers apply a coat of adhesive to each side of the finished padding – This adhesive dries and forms a stiff surface that keeps the felt together and prevents any future shedding. Unfortunately, the adhesive is known to cause damage to floors, particularly hardwood, as well as contain an odor and off-gas. Manufacturers use adhesive because it effectively prevents the rug pad from shedding. Another reason adhesive is used is because it is very inexpensive and is applied rather quickly, cutting down on cost.

What is RPC Heat Pressed™?

While rug pad manufacturers use adhesive in their rug pads, we do not. In order to maintain the natural standards within our rug pads, we developed an intense Heat Pressing process that reinforces the rug pad through heat, not adhesive. The Certified RPC Heat Pressed™ Rug Pads are those that have passed through intense heat during the last stage of production – The heat is utilized to press the felt fibers together to prevent the rug pad from shedding when it is used. If you imagine the act of ironing something, RPC Heat Pressed™ Rug Pads, in essence, have been ironed with intense heat to mold the fibers to keep them intact. Our Heat pressing carries the same effect as applying an adhesive in terms of reinforcement, yet it is a much safer method, as it does not cause damage to the floor.

Heat Pressed Felt and Rubber Rug Pads
There are all felt rug pads and there are felt and rubber rug pads, such as our Ultra Premium. We now know that the felt rug pad is Heat Pressed to prevent shedding of the felt. The felt and rubber rug pads involve Heat Pressing to attach the rubber to the felt. In other felt and rubber rug pads, the rubber is glued to the felt to attach it – This creates a bond between the felt and rubber, yet the glue is an inferior method because of its negative affects. The rubber in Ultra Premium is Heat Pressed to the felt, creating and solid and sturdy rug pad that will not break down, off-gas, smell or stick to the floor like those coated with adhesives.
