Some Simple Facts on Area Rug Pads
Area rug pads are an important part of an area rug for a few reasons. First, rug pads protect the back of any area rug from excessive wear. Second, rug pads can create an airflow for vacuuming, thus adding to the prolonged life of an area rug. Third, area rug pads can add an extra element of comfort as they can be felt underfoot. Lastly, area rug pads can protect your floors as they take the stress of rugs rubbing against them instead of against your floors.
Types of Area Rug Pads
Area rug pads have come a long way. Today, they are made of either a synthetic fiber or natural rubber. Both types of rug pads do not shed, are non allergenic, are odor free and resist mildew. There are many qualities of area rug pads available today and the ones we offer at Rug Pad Corner are the best in their category.
Although most rug pads will protect area rugs, it is important to stay away from the very thin, waffle looking pads. A non slip rug pad with holes in it is good yet there are those on the market that are literally paper thin. These types of pads do not protect much and are usually replaced in less than a year. Our area rug pads are all meant to last 15 to 20 years before needing replacement.
Synthetic jute pads are perfect for area rugs that do not tend to slide. Our Premium pad is made of 100% synthetic jute and adds about a half of an inch support under rugs. It should be noted that this pad does not offer any non slip feature and hence should not be used under slipping conditions. For a similar feel and quality yet with a non slip side, our Ultra Premium pad is the perfect solution. This pad is made of needle punched jute throughout and are covered on one side with a 100% natural rubber backing, not inexpensive latex. This backing prevents rugs from sliding.
Non slip rug pads come in synthetic and rubber materials. Both are very good for rugs, particularly for rugs that tend to slide and move. Besides their non slip features, non slip rug pads also provide protection for area rugs. Our Super Hold pad is made of an organic polymer that does not harm floors. It is more than one eighth of an inch thick and contains holes. The combination of the holes and solid area of this pad creates a strong grip to the floor. Another aspect of the holes in this pad is that they create an airflow for vacuuming, allowing the vacuum suction to penetrate as close to the base of your rug as possible. Our non slip pad is still more comfortable to walk on than the thinner counterparts and lasts for up to twenty years.
Rug Pads for Handmade Rugs
Handmade rugs are usually made well enough to withstand many elements. The back of a handmade rug is usually the part of the rug that takes intense stress as the rug is being used. An area rug pad placed under such a rug can eliminate any stress to the back of the rug. On hand knotted rugs, the knots are what rub against the floor when the rug is walked on. A good rug pad can take this wear instead of the knots, hence increasing the life of your rug. Another important aspect of an area rug pad is one that is meant for small rugs that tend to slide. A non slip, or non skid, rug pad will protect the rug as well as keep it from sliding, in turn avoiding any injury to people.
Rug Pads for Machine Made Rugs
Machine made rugs also need rug pads. Although not hand knotted, the back of a machine made rug is as sensitive as that of a handmade rug. Because the back takes so much wear against the floor it sits on, the rug should have a middle barrier, or rug pad, seperating it from the floor. This will increase the life of your rug and the way your rug looks throughout its life. Rug pads for machine made rugs also stop the rug from sliding.
Protect Your Floors
A good area rug pad also protects floors, particularly hardwood floors. The rug pad eliminates any tendency for rugs to scratch hardwood floors, keeping your floors in excellent condition for years to come.
Comfort
Lastly, a rug pad under your rug will add an extra cushion of comfort under foot. Depending on the thickness of your pad, the extra height could be up to a half of an inch.
