Rug Pad Tip of the Month
Every month we offer a rug pad tip. These tips can be about choosing and buying the right rug pad, care for your rug pad or anything else related to rug pads.
March, 2011: Avoid rug pads offered already cut and packaged
At Rug Pad Corner, we cut every order right of the rolls for a reason. The rolls offer the rug pad as flat as possible. To save time and space, most stores offer rug pads that are already cut to specific sizes and folded within themselves several times to fit into a small plastic bag.
Reasons to avoid pre-packaged rug pads:
1. The rug pad is folded and folded to fit into a small bag. This causes severe fold marks in the rug pad and these fold marks could literally take weeks or months to flatten. Fold marks cause bumps in the rug and trip hazards. Fold marks also cause wear patterns on the rug and wood floor.
2. The rug pad is already a specific size. A rug pad should be cut slightly less than the rug and it is very rare to find a pre-packaged rug pad that fits exactly as it should. Most times, you will find yourself trimming the rug pad with a knife or scissors and this is not ideal to do in the home.
3. The better quality rug pads are only manufactured in rolls. Be careful of pre-packaged rug pads as these are usually some sort of plastic, nylon or imitation rubber adhesive.
How to know if the rug pad is pre-packaged or not:
1. If the store is offering only specific sizes, chances are the rug pad has already been cut and stuffed into a plastic bag.
2. If the rug pad description states "easy to cut or trim with scissors", then the rug pad is a pre-packaged rug pad.
3. If the store does not cut the rug pad based on your rug size, then the rug pad is pre-packaged.
By choosing a rug pad that is cut fresh off the roll, regardless of size, then you can be assured that you are getting a quality rug pad in the best condition possible to perform without any issues to your floor or your rug.

February, 2011:If it is has rubber, make sure there are no glues or adhesives
The popular felt and rubber rug pad is now available in several forms. A common practice is to adhere the rubber to the felt with spray or glue. Take care to find one where the rubber is actually heat pressed to the felt as this eliminates glues, adhesives and out-gassing when the rug pad is in your home. Our Ultra Premium contains a rubber layer that is heat pressed to the felt without the use of glue or adhesives. Our Super Hold is 100% natural rubber, nothing added.
Reasons to avoid glued or sprayed on rubber:
1. Glues and adhesives can break down and cause damage to the floor. The rubber does not adhere well enough to the felt. |
2. The glues or adhesives will start to create an odor and out-gas, creating an unsafe and uncomfortable environment. |
3. A rug pad with glue or adhesives will not last as long as one without these substances. |
