Will the Rug Pad Harm Our Floors? Not Ours.
There are lots of cases of rug pads harming hardwood, wood and many hard floors. These rug pads are usually contain some sort of chemical additive to prevent slipping and this spray eventually sticks to the floor. A quality rug pad will not harm your floor. For non slip rug pads, be sure the rug pad contains real, natural rubber and not a spray latex or rubber like substance. The real layer of rubber is safe for all floors. The prepackaged rug pads, particularly the ones with the holes in them, are usually not real rubber and these can harm your floor. What is the Best Rug Pad for Hardwood and Wood Floors?
The two best rug pads for hardwood and wood floors are either a solid recycled felt jute rug pad or a felt jute and natural rubber combination rug pad. Our Superior rug pad is an example of a solid felt jute that does not contain any chemicals, latex or glues and is safe for all floors. It does not prevent slipping. For rugs that slip, our Ultra Premium rug pad is a solid felt surface and a natural rubber bottom to prevent slipping. Beware of similar rug pads where the bottom is a spray latex or rubber like substance as this can harm your floor.
What Size Rug Pad Do I Need?
The rug pad should always be trimmed a little less than the rug size. A good rule is to trim the rug pad back one inch on all four sides smaller than your rug size. This allows the edges of your rug to fall flat to the floor and avoid any trip hazards or premature wear to the edges of your rug. This will also keep the edges of your rug pad out of sight.
How do I Cut a Rug Pad?
It is always best to have your rug pad cut to your rug size by the store where you bought it. In the event that you cannot do this, then you may cut a rug pad in a few ways. For thinner rug pads, a strong pair of household scissors will usually work. For thicker and more dense rug pads, a carpet knife is needed. When cutting your rug pad, be sure not to mark the floor or the rug. It is best to take the pad to concrete floor or place it on top of a piece of plywood. Use a heavy pair of gloves to avoid possible injury.
How do I Clean a Rug Pad?
Rug pads require little care. An occassional vacuuming is a good idea to remove any dust that might have gone through the pile of the rug and to the rug pad. If you encounter a spill that went to the rug pad, simply reveal the area of the pad that is wet and blot it with a damp sponge. Next, blot dry with paper towels and let air dry for a few hours.
How do I Know I Need to Replace my Rug Pad?
A quality rug pad should last several years yet it will need to be replaced eventually. For felt rug pads, the signs to replace them are if they start shredding. You may see more fibers than usual around the edges of your rug. If this is the case, lift your rug to see the rug pad and try to feel if the pad is shedding easily. If it is, it is time for a new rug pad. For rubber rug pads, since rubber is a natural product, it will eventually dry out. This should take many years. When you start to see your rubber rug pad crakcing, it is time to replace it. For the waffle looking polyester, nylon and pvc (plastic) rug pads with the holes, it is time to replace them when the knobs, or bumps, of the pad start to fall off. Check your rug pad every 6 months for this as well as to see if this type of rug pad is marking your floor.
